A paddle, a perforated ball and a rally
Pickleball uses a solid paddle and a perforated plastic ball. Play singles with two people or doubles with four, on a court about 6.10 × 13.41 metres. Experience in tennis, badminton or table tennis can help, but take time to learn pickleball’s own rules.
Find a session that welcomes beginners
Look for a beginner lesson or a session with an introduction. Our Thailand social events page is one starting point; confirm the current arrangements directly with the venue. A court being open does not mean you can join without booking. Ask about skill level, solo participation and the language used for instructions.
Check three things before booking
Ask whether paddles and balls are provided, whether rental costs extra, and what shoes are allowed. Also confirm the fee, cancellation terms and what happens in wet weather. Keep the check-in location and start time with your booking details.
Make the first day about keeping the ball going
Try to send a ball your partner can return rather than hit as hard as possible. Learn the serve, the two-bounce rule and the kitchen in short rallies. Tell your partner you are new and check any uncertain score before the next serve.
Make a note before your next session
Write down the paddle model you borrowed, how it felt and the ball used at the venue. Once you know where and how often you want to play, it is easier to prioritise purchases. Booking another session can be a better next step than buying a full kit immediately.
